Nepotism - What's your take?

A most common term we hear now a days is Nepotism aka parivaarwad or bhai bhatijawaad which exists almost in every field and most openly in politics and film industry.

After the sad demise of Sushant Singh Rajput, this debate is started again in full swing. This wave has formed two groups, one that is completely against nepotism as Kangana Ranaut (who believes that there are always less opportunities and more struggle for outsiders. True.) and other that keeps justifying nepotism such as Ram Gopal Varma (shocked by his comments justifying nepotism which agitated me to pen down this article) and Karan Johar (who launches only star kids and says that it's his wish to work with whoever he wants to).

Though parivaarwad is a common culture in politics as well, congress being the best example.

What's your take? Is it wrong to help your family or is it possible for someone to choose talent over his/her family?
I believe it is not possible to completely eradicate nepotism from society because it is human nature to prioritise family member over the deserving person. But it is also necessary to wake your inner conscience to understand that you shouldn't help your family by hurting someone else's.

Yes it's human instinct to do anything in his power for the person you love but only if we follow the basic ethics, there is an ethical way to do everything. But that intent is completely missing in this generation, everyone just want to jump the ladder without looking if they are pushing and hurting others in doing so.

The people who justify nepotism saying it is fine to do something for your family, let me correct you - Yes it is fine until you are not snatching the opportunity from someone else who reached there by hard work and struggle.
Yes promote your family, do it multiple times, try until they are successful but don’t pull others down in the process.

To explain it more clearly, it is right to help your family climb the ladder of success if you are creating a new ladder for them and you have the power to do so. But it is absolutely criminal if you snatch someone else's ladder and give it to your family member.

I kind of even agree with people like Karan Johar who believes that it is their choice who they want to promote and work with even if the person is less talented, I mean yes if their conscience allows them to do so, they should. If they think that they hold no responsibility towards world and the audience because of whom they are here, that's their choice. If they believe that they are in this world only to help themselves and their family, it's their choice. Everyone can't be a giver, some are here only for themselves.

There is no doubt that opportunities are less and struggle is more for the outsiders who are far more talented than the so called star kids but if you make it somehow, then you'll also be a part of same culture and might do the same for your son/daughter. But you shouldn't, then only this unethical cycle will end.

Be the change that you wish to see in the world.

This is my take on the whole nepotism controversy. What is yours? Let me know in your comments.

  1. Nice write up, but any which way, we may say the Indian society is far from being altruistic as the hierarchal system is deeply ingrained in our psyche. In the West, the companies be it Microsoft or the big Hollywood Studios, are managed by professionals with exceptional talent, not by sons and daughters.
However,Dharama Productions,YRF and few more big houses are completely family managed, supported by loyal friends, who are script writers, music directors etc, repeatedly promote 'STAR KIDS', give them unlimited privileges and chances, popularize them through their controlled film media houses and give them undeserving trophies and awards.
New film makers have started giving us meaningful cinema with new talent and it is up to us to encourage them with the social media tools in our hands. Hopefully, in the near future,we will see
gifted talent and deserving actors from within or outside the film industry.
